I’m still not sure it’s a good idea for me go out of town with Chris for the weekend. As we drive, Chris tells me more about his family, how he and Jill were so close because there wasn’t anyone else to talk to out in the middle of nowhere. I didn’t think anything could get more desolate than the area where we live now, but as he heads north, I find myself wondering if I’ve annoyed him enough that he’s taking me to the far edge of nowhere to dump my body in the woods.
It feels like we’ve been on the road all day by the time a farm comes into view on the left. Chris slows the truck and turns on his signal. “Damn, you weren’t kidding when you said you grew up in the middle of nowhere. This is something else.” I let out a low whistle, taking in the sight of huge farm equipment slowly rolling through the fields, leaving huge plumes of dust in their wake.
When Chris said he grew up on a farm, I imagined a little hobby farm like we have in our part of the state, but this is a massive operation. There have to be at least fifteen cars parked next to a metal shed and few more back by the barns.
“Now you know why I laugh when you start complaining about how small Burlington is,” he responds. A middle-aged woman steps out the back door of the largest house on the property, which is worth noting because I can see three homes along the driveway and suspect there may be more hidden further down the way, and I smile. This is like a scene out of one of the chick flicks Shelly used to curl up on the couch to watch on the weekend. “And there’s Mom. Looks like she’s having a good day.”
“A good day?” Even from this distance, the woman looks old beyond her years, like she hasn’t slept in far too long. I wonder what a bad day looks like, but figure I probably don’t want to know. And who am I to judge, when it wasn’t that long ago that I couldn’t stand to look at my reflection in the mirror because I had completely let myself go?
“Yeah, she’s out of bed and dressed. According to Dad, that’s a good day these days.” Chris parks the truck at the edge of the yard and jumps out, grabbing my crutches on his way around the back of the truck. Rather than sit here waiting for him to come to my rescue, I open the door and swing my legs out, carefully supporting myself on the frame of the truck as I hop toward him.
“Give me those,” I snip, not wanting his mother’s first impression of me to be that I need her son to help me with the most menial tasks. He hands me the crutches and I stand there waiting as he grabs both of our bags and a box of treats he picked up at the bakery before we left town.
